The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Very cursory observation of road works at Love Lane revealed 2 circular kilns, the more northerly one of which contained pottery <1><2>.

2/3 kilns found: 2 circular, 1.6m and 1.9m diameter, and possibly the stokehole of a third. Late first and early second century pottery wasters, roof and box tiles found on site, probably manufactured here. Not totally excavated, now covered by embankment. Stan Ford believes may be more kilns under the houses and gardens of Dene Way.

Stan Ford also suggests these kilns were the source of the Roman tiles said to have been reused in the Norman period St Mary's Church, Shaw <1>.
