The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

BE_LB55. A4 NEWBURY. London Road; between two bridges over Lambourn; just W of Swan Inn PH. In hedge around Newbury Business Park. Design- Newbury stone. <1>.

Hart's survey found 24 milestones or iron mile posts remaining on this road and can be divided into two sections, the first from Reading to Beenham, the second from Beenham to Hungerford. This milestone is described as one of 16 remaining milestones on the Beenham to Hungerford Stretch. This stone does not conform to the pattern of milestones observed along this stretch in the survey. It is semicircular and badly worn; it has no inscription on it, but there is an oval shape on each side <2>.
