The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

This pump is marked 'P' on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1>, but not on the First <2>, on the south side of the Bath Road opposite Jack's Booth public house by the turning to Tyle Mill. It was apparently recorded by the Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group at SU 62300 69600 <3>, which is south of the marked location; possibly it may have been moved when the side road was widened. It was probably one of a chain of water pumps put along the Bath Road at the end of the 18th century for watering the roads to keep the dust down <4>.

CAST IRON WATER PUMP RECORDED BY BIAG. SPOUT HAS BUCKET LUG. CAP, SHAFT, HEAD AND SPOUT CONNECTION, FLUTED. SPOUT HAS A 2IN DIAMETER. RECORDED BY H MAJOR 25/2/67. STILL EXISTED IN 1987. PHOTOGRAPH ON BIAG RECORD.
