Full Description
This pump is marked 'P' on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1>, and was recorded by the Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group <2>. It was listed in 1984 <3>. It was one of a chain of water pumps put along the Bath Road at the end of the 18th century for watering the roads to keep the dust down <4>; other surviving examples (eg in Thatcham) have been locally listed.
LISTED GRADE II. LATE 18TH CENTURY PUMP, PLAIN SHAFT, DOUBLE HANDLE. BIAG RECORD, MOULDED SHAFT AND HEAD. 10 INS PROJECTING SPOUT. PIERCED BUCKET LUG AND LEVER ARM IN SITU. ARM CONNECTS TO PUMP RODS. DIAGRAM AND DESCRIPTION ON BIAG FORM. RECORDED BY H MAJOR 25/2/1967 <5>
