Full Description

Cast iron water pump. 18th century. Cap missing and lever arm broken. Spout projects 10in and is 3in in diameter. Moulded shaft. Recorded by BIAG 5/4/87. Photo on BIAG form.

This pump is marked 'P' on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1>, and was apparently recorded by the Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group at SU 66000 71700<2>, although it does not appear in the vicinity on 21st century maps. It was one of a chain of water pumps put along the Bath Road at the end of the 18th century for watering the roads to keep the dust down <3>.
