Full Description

The site of a pump by the Bath Road is marked 'P' on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1>. It does not appear to exist here in the 21st century, but a record of a pump was made by the Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group <2>, at SU 67500 72002. It was one of a chain of water pumps put along the Bath Road at the end of the 18th century for watering the roads to keep the dust down <3>.

CAST IRON WATER PUMP. CAP MISSING, BROKEN LEVER ARM (2FT 3IN OF ARM REMAINS INSITU) PROJECTING SPOUT, BUCKET LUG BROKEN. MOULDED SHAFT AND HEAD. PUMP RODS MISSING. RECORDED 25/2/67 BY H MAJOR. STRUCTURE REMOVED BY 1987, PRESUMABLY DURING ROAD WIDENING.
