The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Full Description
The station buildings at Newbury were completely rebuilt in 1908-10 to a design which according to the revised Pevsner <5> was repeated from Westbury station. Further details are given in the history of the Berks and Hants line <9>.
The original Brunel station at Newbury opened in 1847 on the Berks and Hants branch line of the Great Western Railway. Later lines using Newbury ran from Didcot south to Hampshire, and from Newbury to Lambourn.
The railway station was considered for listing in 2012 <7>, having been assessed as part of the Great Western Railway line electrification project <6>, but it was considered to be of a common building type, with limited connection with Brunel (the station being a replacement of the original) <8>. However Newbury Station is of local interest.
West Berkshire Museum has photographs showing the new station in 1908, and in 1919 <10>.
In the early 21st century, Newbury Town Council erected a 'Blue' Plaque to commemorate the wartime role of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway <11>.
