The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Full Description
Hungerford station was built originally as the terminus of the Berks and Hants Railway in 1847, subsequently converted to a through station on the opening of the Berks and Hants Extension Railway in 1862. The 'up' station building was destroyed by fire in 1867 and later replaced. <3>. The First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping shows several lines running into the station area, with a turn table, a crane, a building which was a goods shed, a weighbridge and a station office as well as signal boxes <5>. The Hungerford Virtual Museum has photographs of these buildings and structures <6>, and also gives accounts of the events at the station such as the fire in 1867, the visit of George V in 1912, the destruction of the goods shed by fire in 1936 and the goods train crash of 1971 when 28 wagons came off the track causing damage but no loss of life.
There are no station buildings apart from modern shelters on both sides of the line in the 21st century.
West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing the station in 1919 <7>.
