The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

The original station at Lambourn was built in 1898 for the opening of the Lambourn Valley Railway, but a new station was built by 1910 by the Great Western Railway following its takeover of the line <7>. The line to Lambourn closed for passengers in 1960, although parts of the line remained in operation until 1973 for coal and military use.

When visited by Kenneth Major in August 1974, all that remained of the station was a Great Western Railway gas lamp standard, a trespass notice and a section of vignoles rail (the flat-bottomed rail named after engineer Charles Vignoles) dated 1879 <8>.

West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing the station in 1919 <9>.
