The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Newbury's Town Mill was a working operation when recorded by Kenneth Major as a 'very old mill incorporated into a modern mill' <1>. The main mill building however had been rebuilt in 1892 following a fire. From the 1950s the mill was owned by H Dolton & Sons Ltd. The mill closed in 1972, when it was also photographed and surveyed for the National Record of Industrial Monuments by F Roberts <3>.

The complex is marked as a corn mill from the late 19th century to early 20th century on Ordnance Survey mapping <9>, but as a flour mill from the 3rd Epoch <10> to the 5th Epoch <11>.

According to the VCH, paper-making and silk-throwing was carried out here, presumably at some time in the nineteenth century <14>.

All post-medieval buildings were demolished and the site was subsequently redeveloped for housing.

West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing the mill and mill house in the late 19th or early 20th century <18>.
