Name:Possible Flint Mines at Highdown Hill.
HER Ref:MWS6523
Type of record:Monument

Designations - none recorded

Summary

The site of reported flint mines on Highdown Hill, Sussex was visited on the 23.11.95 as part of a R.C.H.M.E. investigation into neolithic industry and enclosure in England.F.H.G.Engelen mentions flint mines here but there seems to be no other authority.Within the interior of the hillfort, to the W. end, are five circular or sub-rectangular depressions and it may be these that were identified as flint mines, however, they appear more recent.Four appear to be the pits noted by Lane-Fox in his excavations of 1860 and excavated either by him or Irving at that time.Several further depressions to the N. also appear more recent.One further depression to the S.W. of the hillfort appears to lie centrally within a mounded area and the hillfort bank appears to have been constructed over it.As a skeleton, Bronze Age knife and urn were discovered by Lane-Fox in this area, against the S. rampart, it may be that this was the site of a round barrow, now destroyed. {1}
