Summary

Remains of a Roman interval tower located 123ft NW of the East Angle Tower. Partly excavated by S N Miller in 1926 and the upper part exposed in 1953. The wall core is exposed to a depth of 0.7m.

Full description

RCHME: The tower is of Severan date built on an earlier clay and cobble foundation. It survives to 9ft above the foundation with only the top 2ft visible. The internal dimensions are 9 1/4 ft from back to front, 11ft along the rear wall and 11 1/2 ft along the fortress wall. The foundation is 4 ft deep and seperated from the Severan walls by a bed of concrete 6 inch deep. See RCHME for full information although plates may not be available.

NMR information:
A Roman interval tower (NE6 on key plan) was partly excavated in 1926 by S Miller and the upper part exposed in 1953 by the City Corporation. (2)

[Towers NE 1-5 have not been discovered and are conjectural positions.]

Published survey correct. The last excavtion of the tower has been left open, and the wall core is exposed to a depth of 0.7m. See GP Ao/63/113/5. (3)
