Pillbox by Bywell Bridge (Broomley and Stocksfield)

A World War II pillbox is noted in this area. It would have acted to control, and if necessary destroy, the nearby bridge across the Tyne. This probably dates to late 1940 or early 1941 when a defence line was set up along the Tyne and North Tyne rivers.

Reference number:N20733
Historical period:Second World War (1939 to 1945)
