Title:Oldaport and the Anglo Saxon Defence of Devon

Summary:The name La Yoldeport appears in 1310. It is not mentioned in a charter of AD847 or in Domesday. The defences were probably constructed in the early 11th century during the reign of Aethelred ii to repel Viking attacks. The burh was not completed before it was destroyed.
