Summary: | Medal with diameter 30mm & weight 17.3 g. An Annona medal of the Emperor Nero was found on the beach at Thurlestone (Leas Foot Sand). Corroded. Obverse, head of an emperor, facing right, distinguishable as Nero. Reverse, on the right a seated female figure, in the left hand a cornucopia, in the right hand some ears of corn, held out to a standing female figure on the left. The seated figure is Ceres. A similar medal is recorded in Shortt's Sylva Antiqua Iscana, pp 69,52. The first was found near Bartholomew Yard, Exeter, and the other near the Ide. The legends on the second medal are given as obverse; Nero, Claud, Caesar Aug Ger. P. M. TR. P. Cos. II, and reverse Annonan Augusti Ceres. |
