| Summary: | Buckland Abbey founded in 1278 by Amicia, Countess of Devon. Colonised by Monks from Quarr Abbey, Isle of Wight. After dissolution Henry VIII gave it to Sir Richard Grenville who converted the abbey into a dwelling and destroyed greater part of buildings. In 1581 ownership went to Sir Francis Drake in whose family it has remained since. |
