Summary: | Recent work in the west of the county has demonstrated that early elite centres were linked by horseworthy, topographically-sensitive roads, which can be shown to date from before the Norman Conquest. It is also possible to trace pre-Conquest transhumance roads leading to Dartmoor. The consequences of recognising long-distance roads and incorporating them into pre-Conquest landscape history narratives and fieldwork strategies are briefly discussed. |
