Summary:Archaeological survey requested by Dartmoor National Park Authority and the Forestry Commission as part of the development phase for the 'Moor than Meets the Eye' project. The survey was designed to inform DNPA with regards to improving the visibility and interpretation of archaeological sites, rediscovery of sties lost or obscured by tree planting, to restore the settings of individual sites, to produce new material of interpretation and to assist the FC in refinements of future plans to ensure that accidental damage does not occur to archaeological sites during forestry operations. The survey comprised a desktop survey followed by fieldwork. Miraculously, all the sites recorded prior to the creation of the plantation in the first quarter of the 20th century have survived although their condition has suffered as a result of forestry activity. However, not all damage can be blamed on forestry activity. Stone robbing for the construction of field walls from the medieval period onwards has accounted for much of the disturbance to hut circles as well as to medieval houses and fields. The biggest change affecting the archaeological sites, however, is their landscape context. The once open undulating moorland is now thickly covered in tall conifers and it is difficult to see more than 100 metres from any one spot. The names of a number of natural features have also fallen into disuse as a result.
