Title:How Did 'The Priory' Get Its Name?
Originator:Ottery St Mary Heritage Society
Date:2012
Summary:No ecclesiastical link can be found and it is suggested that the building became known as The Priory in the mid 19th century when ownership passed to Rev. George Smith. It was a school from 1896-1912 and following the First World War was home to the local branch of the Royal British Legion. From 1949-1974 it was a police station; the detention cells are still there in the basement (now used for storage). The building became a home for the elderly in 1974. See article for full details.
