Title:A Middle Bronze Age Enclosure, Late/Post-Roman Pit and Late Medieval/Post-Medieval Cloth Drying Rack at Station Hill, Chudleigh

Summary:Excavation by AC Archaeology on land at Station Hill, Chudleigh, revealed an enclosure of later Middle Bronze Age date. The enclosure ditch was not a full circuit, being partly defined by a spring gully. A pit filled with charcoal-rich deposits external to the enclosure was radiocarbon dated to the late/post-Roman period and a line of 18 large postholes of a probably cloth-drying rack to late medieval/post-medieval date. The finds are overwhelmingly of Bronze Age date and include late Trevisker pot, a rare unfinished axe hammer and crucibles indicating scarce evidence for tin working. The geoarchaeological deposits within the spring gully palaeochannel and archaeobotanical remains from various features are described in detail.
