Summary: | A univallate hilltop enclosure, of probable Iron Age date, has been identified in Lifton Wood, close to the Devon/Cornwall border. It is suggested that this site, reused in the late 9th century, rather than Lydford, should be considered as the setting of the Alfredian burh, Hlidan, listed in the Burghal Hidage. Additional defensive features encircle the hill, providing proposed military elements of an enlarged burh and a feasible location for the meeting of Aethelstan’s great Witan of 931. |
