Summary: | Possible trapezoidal enclosure visible on LiDAR at Lower Sturtlebury Wood, Churchstow. The LiDAR appears to show single or double ditch and bank within the woodland, with the north-west corner fossilised in the present field boundary. Boundaries on the West Alvington Tithe Map, coinciding with the LiDAR data, may record the east, west, north sides of the enclosure. The earthworks could be the layout of field boundaries relative to historic lanes, but ‘Sturtlebury’ is recorded on the modern mapping, and the Tithe Apportionment records ‘Startaberry Brake’ and ‘Stantaberry Field’. |
