Title:Batter Their Walls, Gates and Forts: Uncovering a Small Fort in Devon
Originator:Arnold, N.
Date:2022
Summary:In mid-August 1644 King Charles I took an extraordinary decision. On the eve of a major battle, he chose to risk his lines of communication and weaken the security of an important town in order to rescue a small redoubt defended by forty musketeers. However Appledore Fort was no ordinary redoubt and its garrison was no ordinary garrison. In 2021 the largely forgotten defences of this small fort in north Devon were rediscovered, allowing its historical significance to be appreciated.
