Summary: | Archaeological surveys associated with restoring Stover Park were undertaken under the auspices of AC archaeology between September 2020 and March 2021. Stover Park is a Grade II Registered Park and Garden. The investigations have confirmed the presence of several discrete areas of tinworking within the boundary of the country park. It is likely their significance has been diminished by historical and modern land uses. They do however form part of the wider evidence for tinworking off the moor on the Bovey Basin and surrounding area. The investigations have also confirmed the presence of historic field boundaries (as recorded on historic maps), as well as identifying previously unrecorded boundaries within current woodland. In one location it is clear these boundaries pre-date the 18th-century parkland landscaping including the construction of the ornamental canal. The identification of these field boundaries indicates their archaeological potential, combined with documentary and cartographic research, to more fully understand the development of the parkland, such as the landscape pre-dating the 18th century and areas enclosed during the 18th century. It is concluded that the proposed works at Stover Park offer a variety of opportunities for interpretation of the historic landscape, and the interaction of people with the landscape in this area. These include enhanced use of historic tracks and carriage drives, interpretation of the 18th-century parkland, specifically the ornamental canal and the bridge over the canal north of Stover House, and consolidation of the sawmill as an interpretation centre for the management of woodlands, including the First World War management of Stover. It is observed that there is active forestry, including clear felling and selective thinning, in several areas of the Registered Park and Garden. This is one of the many modern uses of the historic park, and in itself is not a harmful activity, and indeed represents a continuation of historic woodland management. However, within Goilmoors Plantation damage was being caused by the creation of new logging tracks, including to the ornamental canal and the drainage features to the north. |
