Summary:An archaeological investigation comprising a desk-based assessment and inspection of the buildings and land affected by a proposed development showed that the farm occupies an area of late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement. The location appears to have retained its importance before and throughout the Saxon period and it is probable that the manor of Charles was administered from Charlestown. With the introduction of the turnpike road along the Bray Valley in the 18th century, however, Charlestown became more remote. Subsequent change has been slight so that below ground remains are likely to have survived well. The cottages to the north of the farmhouse appear to have a more complicated history than the listing description implies, possibly being an earlier farmhouse. The farm buildings also contain elements of different periods of build.
