More information : [NY 88357570] Chapel [NAT] (1) 9/36 Chapel at Chipchase Castle, Grade I. Chapel. Medieval masonry. Largely rebuilt after 1735 for John Reed. South wall ashlar the rest dressed stone probably mainly remains of church described as ruinous in early C18. Single cell, 4-bays. Alternating rusticated quoins. West end has round-headed doorway in moulded surround with capitals and keystone. Round-headed west bellcote also with moulded capitals and arch. Venetian east window in similar surround. South wall has round windows with raised unmoulded jambs, arch and keystone; moulded impost string. Gabled roof with coping and kneelers which at west end hold urns with emblems of Heron family. Interior has similar mouldings round door and windows. Mid C18 fittings including box pews, reading desk and choir stalls with fluted pilasters. Pulpit with sounding-board elaborately carved with enriched panelling, Ionic pilasters and modillion cornice. Panelling behind flanked by full-height Corinthian pilasters. Soffit of sounding board has marquetry sun and relief carving of dove. Communion rails with turned balusters. Several good C18 and C19 wall tablets. (For Chipchase Castle see NY 87 NE 31) (2)
