More information : [NZ 5971 1244 NZ 5979 1245] Tumuli [O.E.]. (1) A revised survey (25" 1928) of these two cairns has been made. They are situated on the summit of Newton Moor and are constructed of loose sandstone rocks. The westernmost cairn has a diameter of 10.0 metres and an average height of 0.8 metres whilst the other measures 8.0 metres in diameter and is 0.5 metres in height. Both have been badly mutilated in the centre and these depressions are now occupied by boundary stones. (2) 0476 Newton Moor, Newton NZ 5971 1244 This stone cairn is less than 100m west of 0498, on Newton Moor. It measures 10m in diameter and is 0.8m high. The centre has been mutilated by an unrecorded excavation, and an upright boundary stone, bearing no legend, stands in the depression. This stone marks the Cleveland County boundary. The cairn is a scheduled ancient monument.
0498 Newton Moor, Newton NZ 5979 1245 This cairn is constructed of small stone and is 7m diameter and 0.3m high. The centre has been excavated and partly refilled; the resultant depression now holds a recumbent boundary stone (see NZ 51 SE 68) bearing the legend TL 1924. This stone marks the Cleveland County boundary. The cairn is a scheduled ancient monument. (3)

Two Bronze Age round cairns are visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NZ 5975 1244. The west cairn is the largest with a diameter of up to 12m, and the east cairn of 7m. Both display hollows in the centre which may suggest previous excavation. The cairns are extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography. (7) |
