"The earliest authentic notice relating to the church of Moresby [Parton] is afforded by the Taxatio Ecclesia of Pope Nicholas IV, about 1291...." It is also mentioned in a document of 1318 and in the Valor Ecclesiasticus taken in the reign of Henry VIII. "A chancel connected with the nave by a pointed Arch of a simple chamfered order springing from half circular or engaged piers". "It was rebuilt or more probably repaired, in the 17th c. as was inferred from the date 1656 carved upon a stone into the upper part of the belfry. (4)
The chancel arch described by Auth.4 is standing in the churchyard to the south of St. Bridget's Church. It rises to a height of approx. 5m. ivy covered and in good condition. There are no signs of foundations or fragments of any previous buildings. The vicar of the above church Rev. L. Lavery was contacted but could offer no information regarding the arch or site of earlier churches. A 25" AM Survey has been made. GP. 59:294:1 Chancel Arch from W. (5) |
