This is 263 yards east of the point where Dere Street crosses the Wall. Excavation in 1930 showed that the side walls were eight feet thick, the north Wall having the normal thickness of nine feet three inches; the internal width of the milecastle was fifty-five feet. Its north gate was of Type III [Long axis milecastles are associated with Sixth Legion]. (2)
Published survey (25") correct. The remains of this milecastle consist of slight earthen platform considerably spread by cultivation. (3)
The milecastle was located 86 feet east of the fence on the north side of the road in 1930 (4a). The north gateway is Type III and had been walled up (4b). The milecastle at NY 9896 6861 survives as a squarish turf-covered platform, 0.5m high on the east side, but elsewhere as a parch mark only. (4)
