More information : [SK 209229116]. Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned at Tutbury in 1569/70 and again in 1585. "The Queen's lodgings at Tutbury was not in the castle itself, but in what she called 'a very old hunting lodge, built of timber and plaster', which stood in the castle tilt-yard and has now completely disappeared". (1)
The "old hunting lodge",...shown on the sixteenth century plan, was much closer to the curtain wall than the "banqueting hall". It was a timber-framed building of two storeys, and last year we came upon what must have been its stone foundation course, but we were not able to follow this up owing to lack of time. (2)
[SK 2096 2916] The site of this building is indicated by a number of alabaster stones in the turf. (3)
Two rough sketch plans made at the time of Mary Queen of Scots' detention at Tutbury show that she occupied the first floor of a timber framed range on the SE side of the castle. (4) |
