Summary : The precise site of the Elephant House at the Tower of London is unknown. It was built in 1255 following the receipt of an elephant by Henry III from Louis IX of France as a gift. The sheriffs of London were ordered to provide capital to fund a building to house it and to ensure that the structure could be reused. Following the animal's death in 1257 there are references to its use as a prison.
