Summary : Mornington Crescent, opened on the 22 June 1907 by the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway, was designed by Leslie Green in maroon glazed faience. It is of two storeys with two bays to Hampstead Road and one bay to the left return. The ground floor housed the booking office and upper lift landing whilst a mezzanine floor contained the lift winding gear. To each bay are giant arches of pilasters supporting architraved heads with keystones. There is a modillion cornice and blocking course above a white faience frieze bearing the words "Mornington Crescent Station" on both facades. The Hampstead Road facade retains its original cast iron lamp brackets and lamps to the entrances. The interior also retains some original features including panelled exterior lift doors and Art Nouveau decorative grilles above the lift interiors. The station closed for refurbishment on 23 October 1992 and re-opened on 27 April 1998. |
