More information : (SU 686064) Farlington Redoubt [NAT]. (1) Farlington Redoubt (SU 686064) This was a small earthwork located to the east of Fort Purbrook and connected to it by a sunken way. It is doubtful whether it was ever armed, or even intended for permanent mounting of guns, being most probably no more than a prepared position for moveable armament so as to command a section of ground concealed from Fort Purbrook. It was never mentioned in subsequent records after being built in about 1868-70, and is now quite derelict and overgrown. (2)
Farlington is in use as a chalk quarry and almost completely demolished. (3)
Demolished. The site is used by Southern Gas as a store. (4)
(Part of the Portsdown Hill defensive line. See SU 50 SE 26 for Historical background.)
The Redoubt was built on the site of the Camp Down Admiralty Semaphore Telegraph. This had been built 1821-22 when the semaphore replaced the shutter-telegraph system, and linked the Compton telegraph station to that at Portsmouth either directly, or if industrial smoke obscured the Portsmouth-Camp Down sighting line, indirectly via a semaphore station at Lumps Fort (SZ 69 NE 8).
