Summary : A Bronze Age bowl barrow survives as earthworks. It has been recorded as part of the Normanton Down (Centre) barrow group (Monument Number 219537) and forms part of the Normanton Down round barrow cemetery (Monument Number 1531088). The round barrow was excavated early 19th century by Sir Richard Colt Hoare (Barrow 157), who found that it had been opened previously. The round barrow was listed as Wilsford 6 by Goddard and subsequently by Grinsell. It was surveyed at a scale of 1:1000 in April 2010 as part of English Heritage's Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. The surviving earthworks have an overall diameter of 36m and comprise a central mound surrounded by a ring ditch, with a concentric outer bank which overlies that around Wilsford 7 (Monument Number 943168) immediately to the south-east, suggesting that Wilsford 6 is later. The mound stands 1.3m high: its top measures 5m in diameter and is occupied by a hollow, 0.4m deep and 2.5m in diameter. The base of the mound, at the bottom of the ditch, is 15.5m in diameter. A break in the mound's slope represents the original ground level. The ditch is circa 0.2m deep and measures up to 7m wide, as does the outer bank. The monument has been damaged by fence lines and grazing animals. |
