Summary : Roman sandstone altar, found on or before 1601 at Kirkby Thore. It was taken to Appleby and is now built into a wall in Chapel Street. The lettering is much weathered. Alongside it is a copy of a milestone found near the Roman fort at Brougham, and several other inscriptions stones, also copies or fabrications. |
More information : Red sandstone altar, found in, or before, 1601 at Kirkby Thore. Taken by Bainbrigg to Appleby and now built into a wall in Chapel Street (NY 6820). Lettering much weathered (1). Alongside it is a copy by Bainbrigg of a milestone found near the Ro Fort at Brougham (NY 52 NW 4) (2). There is also a copy of a Ro inscription seen by Bainbrigg in 1600 in Crowdundle Quarries (NY 62 NW 11). Of this copy lines 4 and 5 have weathered away (3). (Bainbrigg was head master of Appleby Grammar School at beginning of 17th C.). (1-3)
