Summary : House, probably built in the early 16th century and originally forming the south range of the courtyard complex at Bickleigh Castle. Evidence suggests it was once larger and may have been linked to the gatehouse. It was remodelled in the late 16th/17th century, altered in the 19th century and restored in the 1930s. Its present plan comprises a single depth main range containing two large rooms with a through-passage between. A rear wing, at right angles to the main range, is a 19th century rebuild or addition. A lower-roofed building adjoins the west end. The evidence suggests that the 16th century structure was built as an open hall, but its original function is unclear. If it were the hall range, its location, south of the gatehouse, would be unusual. |
