Summary : Site of a group of yew trees to the southeast of Fountains Abbey, which were reputed to have sheltered the monks before the erection of the Abbey. During the 18th century there were seven trees but by 1903 only two remained. The largest tree came down in 1658 and was reported to have a ring count of 1200 years. Archaeological field surveys in 1981 and 1991 recorded the two surviving trees to be in good condition and situated within an iron fenced enclosure.

On a knoll above the mill stands the remnant of the yew-trees
"the Seven Sisters" said by tradition to be over 1,000 years old
and to have sheltered the monks before the erection of Fountains
Abbey, though Hugh says this first shelter was an elm. There
were seven in the 18thc. but by 1903 only two were left. (2-5)
