Ornamental gardens, pleasure grounds and landscape park covering an area of 478 hectares. The park was developed from a Medieval deer park and further expanded during the late 18th century. It had been enclosed by a wall by 1810. Gardens are documented from the Medieval period and included a formal garden laid out between 1702 and 1708, its terracing still survive as earthworks. The same site was laid out in ornamental parterres in 1835 and in 1845 was laid out as a formal garden for a visit of Queen Victoria. It may have been designed by W A Nesfield. Proposals for a flower garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1902 were not implemented. Parts of the pleasure grounds were laid out by 1807, circa 1815 and during the mid 19th century, and include areas of grass terraces created during the early 1820s. (3)
