More information : [SU 4848 2770] Mismaze [G.T.] (1) The meagre evidence available for the maze on St Catharine's Hill suggests that it was cut between 1647 and 1710. In 1647 Wykehamist Robert Mathew wrote a descriptive poem in which Hills, games and pastimes are mentioned. This work "De Collegio Wintoniensi" makes no reference to the maze. The earliest positive evidence is a plan made in 1710. The maze seems to have become associated with the college in the 18th century and in the same period unsubstantiated legends evolved regarding its origin. The maze was re-cut to a slightly different pattern between 1830 and 1840, and the square, formerly with 70 ft. sides, was enlarged to have 86 ft. sides. Plan illustration see AO/61/119/2 and AO/61/336/6. (2) A 25-inch survey has been made of the turf-cut maze centred at SU 4847 2769. It consists of a narrow channel cut in the turf on the level ground at the summit of the hill. It is roughly square in plan with sides of 28.0 m. The maze is not maintained but occasional use by local children enables the course to be followed with little difficulty. (3) No change. Published 1/2500 correct. (4)
