A section of the Roman road from Silchester to Speen is visible as an earthwork within woodland on lidar imagery on Pamber Heath. The road, extending to the north west from Silchester, primarily survives as a bank flanked by ditches continuing as a ditch to the north west and a bank to the south east. The earthworks are visible over a distance measuring 1083 m in length. The bank measures up to 22 m in width. This section of the Roman road was mapped during the Silchester Iron Age Environs project. A second section of the road, to the west of the western gate of Silchester is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. This section of the road is formed of a bank measuring 80 m in length and up to 8 m in width. It was previously mapped during the Aggregate Landscape of Hampshire NMP project. (2-4) |
