More information : (TA 1342 4777) Pentagonal pillbox. This pillbox is to the south of the main complex of Catfoss Airfield and was intended to defend the nearby Battle HQ building. The pillbox has several unusual features, the most unusual of which is the unconventional cruciform anti-richochet wall in the centre, which sub-divides the building. The pillbox is pentagonal in shape and its walls are some 3'6" in thickness. The doorway is in the rear (east) wall and is flanked by two 4" cable ducts. The embrasures are externally stepped and internally smooth splayed. Each embrasure is fitted with a `Turnbull Mountings' machine gun cradle. The site was in very good condition when surveyed by the Fortress Studies Group in 1992 and was at little or no risk. (1)
