Summary : Fort Number 10 of London's Civil War defences, known as Southampton Fort, and taking its name from the adjacent Southampton ouse (later Bedford House). This projected from the rampart line and consisted of a pair of bastions joined by a curtain wall, with two return curtains to the main rampart. The bastions are shown in a late 17th century parchment drawing, and are clear features on the Rocque map. From this evidence the fort had a front of some 125 metres. The resolution of the common council had proposed 2 batteries and a breastwork on the site. |
