| Summary : The Roman Vallum is intermittently visible as an earthwork on air photographs. In sections the ditch, north, south and marginal mounds are well preserved while in other areas only the denuded ditch is visible. To the east of Haltonchesters the course of the vallum can be traced as a very broad shallow depression heading for the southern ditch of the fort defences. |
More information : The Roman Vallum is intermittently visible as an earthwork on air photographs centred at NY 9750 6887. The vallum runs between NY 9506 6933 and NY 9963 6838. In sections the ditch, north, south and marginal mounds are well preserved while in other areas only the denuded ditch is visible. To the east of Haltonchesters, at NY 9955 6840, the course of the vallum can be traced as a very broad shallow depression heading for the southern ditch of the fort defences.
