More information : (TF 130074 derived from OS 1:10000) The multi-period site at Maxey was discovered by Dr. J.K.St. Joseph from aerial photography (see TF 10 NW 1 for an outline of the main features). Complex cropmarks of ring ditches, linears and enclosures at Maxey were plotted in the 1956 RCHME survey. (1)
In 1979-81 excavations at Maxey revealed Middle and Late Bronze age flint scatters. A diffuse, random scatter covers both East and West Fields. A more concentrated spread of flints was found in secondary deposits on the sides of the central ring-ditch mound (TF 10 NW 59) and probably represents casual use of the mound during winter floods. Finds include a re-worked polished flint axe. (2) |
