Summary : An Iron Age/ Roman coaxial field system, ditches, pits, and enclosures and a Roman roadside quarry and ditches are visible as cropmarks on air photographs. The field system is extensive but fragmentary. It comprises a number of parallel, straight field boundaries on an approximately north south alignment.Incorporated into this field system are nine enclosures. A D-shaped enclosure, curvilinear enclosure and three irregularly shaped enclosures abut the field boundaries. To the south of these is a long, sinuous ditch. Aligned on this ditch are two irregularly shaped enclosures, a rectilinear enclosure and a curvilinear enclosure.A large number of other field boundaries and ditches can also be seen. These enclose more irregularly shaped areas and are on a number of different alignments. Some of these features are directly associated with the coaxial field system but the relationship with others is not as clear. The roadside quarry lies to the south-west adjacent to the Doncaster - Tadcaster Roman road and is partly enclosed by a double ditch, possibly the site of earlier settlement. |
