Summary : Site of a Bronze Age round barrow on Gallows Hill, Arreton Down. The barrow was originally part of a barrow group of three barrows, but is no longer extant. (For details of the other two barrows see HOB UID 461309 - NMR SZ 58 NW 24 and HOB UID 1458694 NMR SZ 58 NW 104). It was described as a barrow with a hollow at the centre prior to excavation in 1853. These excavations found it had previously been disturbed, but fragments of an urn, charcoal and horse teeth were found. |
More information : (This barrow was originally recorded as Barrow C in HOB UID - 461309 NMR SU 58 NW 24) SZ 53538740: Barrow - destroyed. (1) A barrow with a hollow at the centre, located some 45 yards south of Barrow 'B' (HOB UID 461309 - SZ 58 NW 24). It was excavated by Kell and Wilkins in 1853; it had been previously rifled, but portions of an urn, some charcoal and horse's teeth were found. (2)
