Summary : The remains of a Medieval barbican, part of the Conisbrough Castle complex. The remains are of faced stone rubble situated near the present entrance. The function of the barbican was to control access to the castle.
More information : Barbican: Controlled access, and additional protection
to the main gate of the castle was afforded by the barbican. It
consists of two projecting parallel walls, the gap between
them formerly closed by gates. The northern wall joined the
semi-circular turret that projects from the curtain, the
southern bears to the right and formerly continued parallel to
the curtain to cover the main entry to the castle. The entry to
the ward was at the end of the passage on the left. (1)

SK 5142 9888 The remains of the barbican consists of walling
constructed of faced rubble roughly coursed. The overall width
of the plinth is 2.1 m. with the existing walls above it 1.2. m.
wide. The height varies from 1.5 m. to about 6 m. but the
original state was higher. The south wall is the best preserved
and for greater part of its length rises to the maximum height
quoted. The barbican now serves as the modern public entrance to
the inner ward.
