More information : [NY 7908 6900] Old Quarry [T.I.] (1)
On the north side of the Wall, close to the Knag Burn gateway is a depression that in the past has been thought to mark the site of a small amphitheatre. Excavations in 1898 and 1931 proved it to be a quarry, probably opened for repairs to the Wall. (2)
The quarry is now under grass. (3)
At NY 7908 6899 on the N side of Hadrian's Wall, is a large depression, up to 4.6m deep, and 33m NE-SW by 28.5m transversely. Excavation in 1898 (4a) conformed that it was a quarry for sandstone. The few scraps of Roman pottery found in the top-soil are no chronological guide. It appears that the quarry destroyed all traces of the Wall ditch, and thus is unlikely to be associated with the initial construction of the Wall. It could be late Roman or much later in date. (4)
