Medieval deer park, c.80ha, with C16 and C17 walled gardens of 4 1/2 ha, redeveloped 1850s and post 1945. The park at Penshurst lies mostly northwards from Penshurst Place, which stands on the centre western side of the park.The formal gardens lie within a walled enclosure built between 1570 and 1666. Walled garden set within a landscape park at Penshurst Place. The walled garden was constructed during the early 16th century- 17th century and restored in the 1850s. It is planted with later designs including schemes by John Codrington dating to the 1960s-1970s and Lanning Roper in 1968. The park had been landscaped by the early 18th century and was originally a deer park documented in 1290. Some of the tree planting took place during the 1990s. (3) |
