Hob Uid: 1406895
Location :
Lincolnshire
Lincoln
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SK9738071960
Summary : The West Gate of the upper town at Lincoln, was discovered buried in the mound of the Norman castle, north of the Postern Gate, but south of the north-west angle of the castle inner bailey. The grest arch collapsed upon discovery and the structure was reburied to save further collapse. It was exposed in 1984 during investigations of the Mediaeval West Gate, but only 11 voussoirs were exposed and reburied.
More information : The front of the Roman West Gate was revaled in 1836 buried in the mound of the Norman Castle, north of the Postern Gate, but south of the NW angle of the castle. The great arch collapsed almost on discovery and the structure was buried to save further collapse. Ross suggests that the gate (which had no footways) projected beyond the wall. (1,2)
